Kyoto has many attractions, and even during a long stay,
there are new discoveries to be made every day.
While many famous tourist spots are featured in guidebooks,
here we introduce some recommended spots around our hotel.

Kamogawa River

The Kamogawa River flows north and south through Kyoto City, and is a popular place of relaxation for locals and tourists alike. You can enjoy beautiful scenery in every season, with cherry blossoms in spring, summertime cool terraces, and autumn leaves in fall. In addition, sidewalks are built along the river, where people gather to enjoy walks, jogs, and picnics. A place characterized by a rich natural environment and Kyoto-like scenery, the river has historically been a part of Kyoto's development.

Kiyomizu Temple

Located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, this is one of Japan's most representative ancient temples, founded in 778. The stage from the main hall is also known as "jumping off the stage of Kiyomizu," and is famous as a spot with a spectacular view of Kyoto city. Within the temple grounds is Otowa Waterfall, from which three streams of water spring forth that are said to bring good fortune in longevity, academic achievement, and romantic success. It was also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, and is popular as a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves and cherry blossoms, attracting many tourists with its beautiful scenery throughout the seasons.

Toyokuni Shrine

This shrine enshrines Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a warlord who unified Japan during the Sengoku period. It was built in 1599, but was abolished after the fall of the Toyotomi clan, and was then rebuilt by imperial decree of Emperor Meiji. Within the grounds are the Karamon Gate and Treasure Museum, both designated as national treasures, as well as Sadateru Shrine, which enshrines Hideyoshi's wife, Kita no Mandokoro. An annual festival is held on September 18th, attracting many worshippers.

Kyoto National Museum

This museum, which opened in 1897, introduces history and culture. It has the Meiji Kotokan, an Important Cultural Property, and the modern Heisei Chishinkan, and exhibits Buddhist art and traditional Japanese crafts. The museum's beautiful gardens are also one of its attractions, and it also has a wide range of special exhibitions and educational programs. Every time you visit, you'll make new discoveries and learn more about history and culture.

Sanjusangendo

Located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, this historic Buddhist temple is officially called Rengeo-in. The main hall, with a total length of about 120 meters, is the longest wooden building in Japan, and inside are 1,001 Thousand-Armed Kannon statues, a spectacular sight that overwhelms visitors. It was founded at the request of Emperor Goshirakawa at the end of the Heian period and rebuilt in the Kamakura period.

Myoho-in Temple

This Tendai sect temple was founded by Saicho in the early Heian period. It has ties to Emperor Goshirakawa and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and is especially famous for the kuri (national treasure) that was used as the kitchen when Hideyoshi held a memorial service for a thousand monks. Within the temple grounds are the Daishoin, a designated Important Cultural Property, and the main hall (Fugendo), which enshrines the Bodhisattva Fugen as its principal image. You can also enjoy the beautiful garden during the special autumn opening. It is usually closed to the public, but you can visit the interior during special viewings.

Shosei-en Garden

This enclave of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple was donated by Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1641. It has been designated a national scenic spot and is characterized by its stroll-style garden with a pond that was created in 1653. The garden features a beautiful landscape known as the Thirteen Views, centered around Engetsu-ike Pond, and is dotted with historical buildings. The cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves are particularly spectacular, attracting many tourists. There is also a teahouse and a shoin study in the garden, where cultural events are held.

Kenninji Temple

The head temple of the Kenninji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, it was founded in 1202 by Zen master Eisai. It was founded by Minamoto no Yoriie and is known as the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. Within the temple grounds are many important cultural properties, such as Tawaraya Sotatsu's "Wind God and Thunder God Screen" and Kaihoku Yusho's sliding door paintings. You can also experience zazen and copying sutras, making it a popular place to calm your mind. The gardens are also beautiful, and the Choon Garden and Daiyuen Garden are particularly noteworthy.

Chishakuin Temple

This is the head temple of the Chizan school of Shingon Buddhism. It was founded at the end of the 16th century and restored by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Within the temple grounds, there is a treasure museum that displays the wall paintings by Hasegawa Tohaku and his school, which have been designated as national treasures, as well as a beautiful garden. In particular, the autumn leaves and cherry blossoms in the garden are spectacular in spring and autumn, attracting many tourists. Chishakuin Temple is also known as a temple of learning, and offers a wide range of experience programs such as copying sutras and zazen meditation.
